Reading Year in Review - 2010

I snagged this end of 2010 book survey from The Perpetual Page Turner. To be clear, these aren't exactly books that came out in 2010 but books I've read this year.


1. Best book of 2010? It's hard to pick just one, so here are my top 4.

1. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
2. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
3. In the Woods by Tana French
   
4. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
   

2. Worst book of 2010? Go Ask Alice by Anonymous. I picked this one up because I read a lot of good reviews about this book, but it was just so over the top and ridiculous to me. Tithe by Holly Black reallllly dragged for me. I finished the book but I won't be reading the rest of the series.

3. Most Disappointing Book of 2010? Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith. I love Abraham Lincoln and I love Buffy so I thought this book would bring together two things that I love. The book was OK, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped. I also felt that Mockingjay was the most lackluster book of the Hunger Games series. It wasn't horrible but it certainly wasn't the best book I read this year.

4. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2010? I'm going to have to say Teacher Man by Frank McCourt. This book has been in my to read pile for a long, long time and I kept putting it off because I felt like I wouldn't really have anything to relate to as far as teaching goes that would hold my interest in this book. Boy was I wrong, this book was really a delight. To be honest you can't go wrong with anything McCourt writes.

5. Book you recommended to people most in 2010? I think it depends on the person who is asking, but I did recommend The Road by Cormac Mccarthy to anyone who asked. I've also recommended anything by Mary Roach and In the Woods by Tana French a few times.

6. Best series you discovered in 2010? I REALLY got into series this year. It's hard to pick a top three, so here are a few of my favorites in no order

• The Tea Rose Trilogy by Jennifer Donnelly - I read the second book in this series last year and I'm ANXIOUSLY awaiting the 3rd.
• The Irish Detective Series by Tana French - These books actually aren't a continuing series, but have the same characters. I read all three books as quickly as I could.
• Lady Julia Grey Series by Deanna Raybourn
  
• The Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley
• The Hollow Series by Jessica Verday - The first book in this series was excellent!
• The Pretty Little Liars series - Ok, this series is a very campy but I really enjoyed it. I read a few of these books in a day.

8. Most hilarious read of 2010? Bonk by Mary Roach

9. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2010? I think I'm going to have to say The Likeness and In the Woods because I really wanted to know what was going to happen. I also couldn't stop reading The Road. I stayed up until 5 am one night reading it.

10. Book you most anticipated in 2010? Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

11. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2010? The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson

12. Most memorable character in 2010? Cassie Maddox from Tana French's novels. Elizabeth Mckenna from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Veronika from Veronika decides to Die. Hannah Baker from 13 Reasons Why. Samantha Kingston from Before I fall, Ellie Linton from The Tomorrow series and lastly T.S. Garp from The World According to Garp.

13 .Most beautifully written book in 2010? In the Woods by Tana French. Hands down.

14. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2010? The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho,

15. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2010 to finally read? The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton or The Giver by Lois Lowry.
